PREP ROUNDUP: University girls down Spring Mills, Mohigans tie undefeated Patriots

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Set pieces proved decisive at Mylan Pharmaceuticals Stadium, as University (4-1-1) defeated Spring Mills (2-2-1) 3-1.

The Hawks scored the only goal of the first half when Madison Wesolowsky beat a defender and played a perfect cross to Tristen Bright, who one-timed a volley into the back of the Cardinals’ net with 25 minutes remaining.

Spring Mills’ stout defending kept the Hawks frustrated until midway through the second half, when UHS’ Heather Brunner’s corner kick bounced off a defender and past goalie Kiran Cole for a 2-0 lead.

The Cardinals responded with 10 minutes to play for their only goal on the day when UHS failed to clear a corner, allowing Sarah Rader to capitalize with a low shot through traffic to cut into the Hawks’ lead.

A third set piece goal of the half put the game away. Kassidy Wolfe’s corner led to a scramble in front of the Spring Mills’ goal, and Mia Travis pounced to drive a one-time shot into the back of the net restoring the Hawks’ two goal lead.

Lizzy Edwards made two saves for University, while Cole made nine saves for the Cardinals.

UHS next plays on Tuesday when they host John Marshall at 5:45 p.m.

Trinity 2 Parkersburg South 0

PARKERSBURG, W.Va. — The Kyle Knight-Noah Kuliko combo shutout Parkersburg South on their own turf Saturday, dominating the Patriots (0-7) on both sides of the ball for a 2-0 win.

The Warriors (3-2-1) put just three shots on goal, but made them count in the win. The Patriots put 11 shots on goal, but senior keeper Fletcher Hartsock embodied Dikembe Mutombo’s spirit of rejection to save each shot.

“The team has played a tough schedule so far, but has come together and played in true team fashion,” coach Chad Laskody said. “They put those two shots in during the first half, and switched defensively in the second to preserve the win.”

Trinity returns to the pitch on Monday, hosting Weir (3-0-1) at 6 p.m.
