Mohigans fall out of Class AAA top 10, Hawks receive no votes

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — After a 27-21 loss to Parkersburg on Friday night, the Morgantown High football team fell out of the top 10 of the Class AAA MetroNews Power Rankings.

With Week 2 set to begin Thursday, the Mohigans (0-1) still received votes at four, but were No. 8 in the preseason ranking and are now No. 13. They will have a chance to get back on track Friday, traveling to Class AA No. 4 Bridgeport (1-0) to face the Indians. Bridgeport knocked off Lewis County 28-0 in Week 1.

University (1-0) received seven votes in the preseason rankings, but despite beating John Marshall 18-7 to open the year, the Hawks did not receive any votes. UHS will host No. 9 Parkersburg South (1-0) on Friday. The Patriots beat Ripley 49-18 in Week 1.

Preston (1-0) earned a 37-14 road win at Hampshire and the Knights will play at North Marion (1-0) on Friday. The Huskies beat East Fairmont 33-10 in a Marion County rivalry last Friday.

Martinsburg (1-0), aiming for a fourth-straight state title this year, is still the cream of the crop in Class AAA. The Bulldogs beat H.D. Woodson (D.C.) 49-12. Spring Valley, Huntington, Musselman and Cabell Midland round out the top five in AAA.

In Class A, Clay-Battelle fell 34-21 on the road and is no longer receiving votes after earning four in the preseason rankings. The Cee-Bees (1-0) will host Meadow Bridge on Friday. Meadow Bridge (1-0) beat Van 40-6 last week.

Trinity (1-0), after knocking off Mapletown (Pa.) 38-34 last Friday, will host Hannan this Friday. Hannan (0-1) lost to No. 6 Parkersburg Catholic 58-0.

Wheeling Central (1-0) remains No. 1 in Class A after beating then-No. 2 Williamstown (0-1) 35-13 last Thursday. Doddridge County, Midland Trail, Williamstown and Mount View round out the top five.

In Class AA, Bluefield stays at No. 1 after beating Graham (Va.) 41-27 in Week 1. Fairmont Senior, Keyser, Bridgeport and Poca round out the top five.
