Preston upends Trojans 37-14 on the road

ROMNEY, W.Va.  — Even with Tra Bryson and Trevor Sardo connecting on a 60-yard slant two plays from scrimmage, Preston bunkered down defensively for the 37-14 season-debut victory.

Trevor Thomas accounted for four touchdowns, splitting them between long shots in the air and quarterback sneaks.

Thomas’ first touchdown was a 40-yard bomb to Colton Rosenberger, and his second was a 35-yard touch to Jaxson Lewis.

Jesse Gribble and Ayden Beishoff accounted for two more scores, with Gribbles coming on a 6-yard rush and Beishoff’s a 1-yard push.

The Knights (1-0) were 1 for 6 in extra point attempts.

Hampshire (0-1) had four turnovers — three of which were fumbles. Rosenberger accounted for the other turnover, picking Bryson’s pass out of the air for his first interception of the year.

Other standouts on defense were Robby Stinson and Beishoff.

Aside from the opening drive score, Bryson and Sardo only connected once more for a score — a deep ball in the second quarter.

“Other than those two touchdown plays, our defense held them down,” coach Jonathan Tennant said. “It was a good night (overall). We just need to clean up our special teams.”

Preston will play at 7 p.m. Sept. 6 at North Marion.
