Music and art fill streets of Kingwood during festival

KINGWOOD — Saturday was a day of art, music and fun, thanks to the the Preston County Music and Arts Festival and the Preston County Antique Tractor and Machine Association.

“The storm from last night is over and it’s a beautiful day,” Dr. Lynn Housner of the Preston Community Arts Center said. “We are expecting a crowd.”

Bob and Robine Riffle readied their doughnut trailer for visitors. Robine said Jim Walker started the business in 1974.

“We took over in1999. We set up at the street fairs and the Buckwheat Festival,” she said.

The Preston County Inn served hot dogs, hamburgers, iced tea, cucumber water, French fries and other treats. They also had a wine and beer bar set up inside the arts center.

Theresa Shiflett of T&J’s Up Cycled Crafts from Terra Alta displayed a variety of reclaimed items made of wood. She said her husband created the items from discarded wood and she provided the decoration. The Shifletts also make unique Christmas crafts and baskets.

New this year at the festival was the Day Spa. Silversmith and artist Robert Riffe, owner of Mystical Crystal Jewelry, had a display of unique handmade silver and gem stone jewelry.

Barb Wade was set up with Scentsy products, and Nikki Kuchinski from Botanical Bodywork offered relaxing massages to fairgoers.

While people checked out the art and listened to music on Price Street, little Cohen Moser, son of Kari Rehe and Scott Moser, of Arthurdale, checked out the tractors.

“He wants to know what everything is and what it does,” Rehe said.

While his mother started the tractor race, Dominick Spadafore, son of Joe and Brandy Spadafore, of Shinniston, tried his had at milking a cow — or a makeshift model of one, anyway. The prize for doing a good job was a Cow Tales candy stick.

Mark Rinehart, of Terra Alta, was one of the vendors at the antique tractor and machinery show. Rinehart makes handmade leather items including purses, wallets, belts and knife and gun holsters. He said some of his items are hand painted and some are stamped. Rinehart also does concealed purses and other special request items.

The Tractor and Machinery Show Arts, Crafts and Flea Market will open at 8 a.m. today. Tractor and machinery judging will be at noon, followed by music by Greg Short and Friends at 1 p.m.
