WVUH, Mon Health among top 3 hospitals in state in US News rankings

MORGANTOWN — Two Morgantown hospitals ranked among the top three in the state on the just-released U.S. News & World Report 2019-20 Best Regional Hospitals rankings.

WVU Hospitals ranked second and Mon Health Medical Center tied for third.

U.S. News evaluated more than 4,500 medical centers nationwide in 25 specialties, procedures and conditions, Mon Health noted in a press release. Charleston Area Medical Center took the top spot and St. Mary’s Medical Center-Huntington tied with Mon Health for third.

Asked for comment, WVUH said in an email exchange, ““We are honored to again be recognized by U.S News and World Report. This year, we received our third consecutive national ranking in urology, and in June, U.S. News recognized WVU Medicine Children’s with its second consecutive national ranking in pediatric urology. We are grateful for the all of the employees who made these rankings possible, and we are proud to see their efforts recognized on the national stage.”

At Mon Health, President and CEO David Goldberg said in the release, “We know that we provide the best patient care possible at Mon Health Medical Center. Our patients and visitors share their positive stories with us regularly.

“As an advanced acute care hospital, we are honored to be recognized as the best of the best in our state. Such national recognition would not be possible without the caliber of the medical staff, nurses, clinical staff and colleagues who lead in delivering best in class care that is always patient centered,” Goldberg said. “We are blessed with the best staff at MHMC and our recognition shows we are leading the way to improve health outcomes in the communities we serve.”

The annual Best Hospitals rankings and ratings, now in their 30th year, are designed to assist patients and their doctors in making informed decisions about where to receive care for challenging health conditions or for common elective procedures, Mon Health said. Awards are based on several key measures, including nurse staffing and patient safety. In rankings by state and metro area, U.S. News recognized hospitals as high performing across multiple areas of care.

WVUH’s urology program ranked 37th in the nation for adult specialties. Pediatric urology ranked 30th for children’s specialties.

WVUH earned high performing scores for nephrology and neurology/neurosurgery in the adult specialties category.

US News also rates certain procedures and treatment of conditions. Mon Health explained that eligibility to be rated in procedures and conditions is based on the number of patients treated during the evaluation period and focuses on typical Medicare patients.

For WVUH, treatment of COPD and heart failure earned high performing marks.

Overall patient experience earned three stars out of five based on inpatient surveys completed after discharge. Overall hospital satisfaction, willingness to recommend and satisfaction with involvement in recovery earned four stars. Noise volume scored only two stars and room cleanliness just one.

Mon Health earned high performing scores in four procedures and conditions: aortic valve surgery, COPD, heart failure and lung cancer surgery.

Mon Health’s patient experience scored four of five stars. Eight areas scored four stars: overall satisfaction, willingness to recommend, satisfactions with doctors’ communication, satisfaction with nurses’ communication, quality of discharge information, involvement with recovery, staff responsiveness and noise volume. Room cleanliness and satisfaction with efforts to prevent medication harm scored three stars.
