Masontown trail head sees improvements, thanks to grant

KINGWOOD — Preston County Parks and Recreation (PCPaR) has received an AARP grant to help develop the Masontown trail head park of the Deckers Creek Trail.

The $4,207 AARP Community Challenge Grant was announced Friday. The only other recipient in West Virginia was the City of Charleston, which was awarded a $15,000 grant.

Tom Hunter, associate state director of communications for AARP West Virginia, said the grants are for “quick action projects.” They must be completed by Nov. 4.

Nationally, 159 organizations received a share of the $1.6 million total. The process was highly competitive, Hunter said, with 1,660 applications.

PCPaR will use the money for signage directing folks to the park, a picnic table, bike rack and bench. It will also help pilot several programs, such as raised beds and a gardening program taught by a Master Gardener.
