Cobun Creek reservoir project slows due to recent wet weather

Cobun Creek was moved and work started on a dam footer, both part of the Flegal Dam and Reservoir project.
“We are 10% complete with the Flegal Dam and Reservoir project based on expenditures,” Morgantown Utility Board Spokesman Chris Dale said in an email to The Dominion Post. “Cobun Creek has been relocated, excavation for the dam footer is underway and the contractor (Kanawha Stone) is currently dewatering the dam footer area. Soil and stone from excavation are being stockpiled on-site for dam construction. While progress has been hampered by wet weather, the contractor assures us that the pace of construction will soon increase significantly.”

The nearly $50 million project is projected to be complete in late 2020.
The new reservoir will hold 370 million gallons of water, a 30-day supply. It stretches about 4,500 feet southeastward in the valley between Grafton Road and Kingwood Pike — along Cobun Creek Road and following the lines of Cobun Creek and Mountain Run.
MUB is still working on a plan to connect a pipe from the secondary water source reservoir currently under construction and its water treatment facility on Don Knotts Boulevard.
Plans to go through White Park were halted when public outcry began in the spring. Several public meetings were held for MUB officials to hear from individuals against disturbing the trees in the park.
