Hortence Taylor

Hortence Zillah Taylor, 94, of Newburg,  went to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 2, 2019, at Grafton City Hospital. She was born October 20, 1924, in Newburg, daughter of the late Virgil Arlington and Cora Oda Wright Taylor.
Hortence graduated from Newburg High School in 1942, Potomac State College in 1944,  WVU in 1946, and got her masters from WVU and graduated in 1955. She was a life time member of the Newburg United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School Class and played the Piano. She was also a member of the Newburg Senior Citizen Center. She retired as a teacher from the Preston County Board of Education with over 43 years of service. She also taught piano lessons for over 50 years.
Hortence was an awesome mentor for many students as a teacher at Newburg High School, her many piano students, who were all gifts to her and her devotion to the Newburg Community, the Newburg United Methodist Church, and much more. Her time on this earth was as a servant to God. She will be greatly missed.
Hortence is survived by three nieces, Sandra Stankard and husband, John, Oconomowoc, Wis., Diane Case, Mansfield, Pa., Linda Johnson and husband, Nathan, Saratoga, Calif.; two cousins, Bob Hovatter and wife, Virginia, Evansville, Roxanne Hovatter Swisher and Jeff, Evansville.
In addition to her parents, Hortence was preceded by one brother, Joe Taylor and wife Iris; one niece, Christie Weber, and her niece’s husband, Steve Case.
Family and friends will be received at Bolyard Funeral Home, 79 Morgantown Ave. Newburg, from 2 – 8 p.m.  Wednesday, Feb. 6,  and at the Newburg United Methodist Church from 11 a.m.  on Thursday, Feb. 7,  until time of service at  noon with the Pastor David Freeman officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Newburg United Methodist Church P.O. Box 183 Newburg WV 26410. Interment will follow at the Shay’s Chapel Cemetery.
