Foundation gives $2,000 grant to Kingwood for pool

KINGWOOD — The Kingwood Pool got some good reviews and a donation this week.
At Tuesday’s Kingwood Council meeting, Donna Montgomery and Jean Krasco thanked council for reopening the pool, which had been closed since 2013. Montgomery said they took her grandchildren to the pool often, and her grandson learned to swim there.
“That has been a godsend over this summer,” Montgomery said, expressing hope that council will reopen the pool again next summer.
Mayor Jean Guillot thanked the women and said, “I don’t think we’ve put in all this work just for one year.”
Kingwood Parks and Recreation Director Kevin Stiles said 150-200 people used the pool each day, when the weather was good.
Stiles also received notification from the Weldon Family Foundation that it is giving the city a $2,000 grant for the pool. He said that may go toward a diving board. Stiles applied for the grant in April.
Admission will be $1 this Sunday, a back-to-school special. After Sunday, hours will change to noon-5 p.m. Saturday and 1-5 p.m. and Sunday. Lap swimming will be available from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, and night swimming 7-9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.
The pool will be open regular hours Saturday, Sunday and Monday of the Labor Day weekend and close after that.
