Stephen Brooks

Stephen R Brooks, 69, of Morgantown, passed away August 9, 2018, at Capon Springs and Farms Resort.  He was born August 10, 1948, in Beckley, and raised in Mullens, by the late William and Marguerite (Bodo) Brooks.

He was a graduate of WVU School of Pharmacy (1971) and WVU School of Law with a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree (1975).  He practiced law with the firm of Furbee, Amos, Webb and Critchfield in Fairmont, before joining the firm of Flaherty, Sensabaugh, and Bonasso, PLLC in June 2000

In addition to his law practice, he formed and was the director of the Fairmont Specialty Services corporation from 1990-2009, 1998 Specialty Warehousing, 2004 Ravenswood Specialty Services, and in 1998 became involved as an organizer of The Monongahela Valley Bank, Inc., now MVB Bank, Inc. The bank opened for business in Fairmont,  on January 4, 1999.  He served as Chairman of the Board of the Directors of MVB Financial Corp, and MVB Bank, Inc.

Stephen was a respected member of the WV Bar Association, Cheat Lake Rotary Club, WV National Guard, Fairmont State Town and Gown community theatre, past chairman of the Fairmont State Board of Governors, past member of the Marion County Board of Education, and was included among The Best Lawyers in America, 2008-2017, and was named 2012 Lawyer of the Year, Morgantown,  Medical Malpractice Law,  Defendants, and 2014 Lawyer of the Year, Morgantown,  Personal Injury Litigation, Defendants.

He is survived by his wife of over 47 years, Kathy M Brooks, of Morgantown; his sons, Joshua S. Brooks, of Fairmont  and William J. Brooks, II, of Johns Island, S.C.. He is also survived by his absolute prides and joys, his grandchildren, Camden J.H. Brooks, of Fairmont, Hannah M Brooks, of Charleston, S.C., and Ethan Jackson Brooks, of Johns Island, S.C.

Family will receive and greet friends at Suncrest United Methodist Church at 479 Van Voorhis Rd, Morgantown, from 12:30 – 2:30 p.m.  on Thursday, August 16, followed by a memorial service at 3 p.m. A reception and celebration of his life will take place at The Pines Country Club’s banquet room, 3062 Point Marion Rd, Morgantown, from 5-7 p.m.
