Historic Landmarks Commission to host gravestone preservation workshop Sept. 8

MORGANTOWN — A free, interactive cemetery gravestone preservation workshop will be held by the Morgantown Historic Landmarks Commission from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m.  Sept. 8 at Oak Grove Cemetery.

The class is limited to 25 seats. Early registration is encouraged.

The workshop will focus on cleaning gravestones, resetting tablet-stones, reconstructing multi-piece monuments, rejoining broken gravestone pieces, consolidating weak and decayed stones and sealing stone.

Participants will learn about the tools, materials and options for performing these tasks.

Jonathan Appell, founder of Atlas Preservation, will lead the workshop. Appell has more than 25 years experience repairing, restoring and preserving gravestones.

The workshop is being funded by the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture & History. Funds were also provided by the U.S. National Park Service.
