Bicyclist killed in hit-and-run on W.Va. 7, police seek info on driver

MORGANTOWN — Morgantown Police are investigating a hit-and-run that resulted in the death of a 20-year-old Morgantown man Friday night.
According to a release, Morgantown Police officers, along with the Morgantown Fire Department, responded to a call on Earl L. Core Road, at around 11:15 p.m., in reference to a hit and run involving a bicycle. The cyclist was later identified as Divante Coles.
Based on a preliminary investigation and witness statements, police said Coles was riding a bicycle west on Earl Core Road when he was struck from behind by a motor vehicle traveling in the same direction. The vehicle continued traveling west on W.Va. 7, toward the downtown area. Coles received serious injuries and was transported to Ruby Memorial Hospital. He was pronounced dead as a result of those injuries at 5:37 a.m. Saturday, police said.
The vehicle involved is described as a dark, possibly black, Chrysler/Dodge sedan. The vehicle should have front-end damage with the driver’s side headlamp not functioning.
Police are continuing to investigate this incident.
