Good deeds, generosity, compassion still the key

A group of senior citizen men tried to teach a 13-year-old grandson of one of them about life as they knew it. After their address, I said, “Do any of you know how to operate the computer?” There was silence.
But I was not entirely right. There is one thing fathers and grandfathers can teach our youth — truth, honesty and responsibility.
The Dominion Post (May 24) published a letter to the editor about a schoolgirl given a calligraphy assignment in Arabic on Islam. So what? School is about sampling a variety of subjects. Each student needs a working knowledge of all walks of life. We are all connected.
Our flag gives each of us the right to live our lives as we choose. To stand, kneel and, yes, extend your finger. A reality that many seem to distort, to convey a false image or impression of to be hurtful in our words and actions toward others.
It is our responsibility to be truthful and honest; to speak with knowledge, wisdom and understanding of all. Did I forget, common sense?
A local reality show declared a man had the right to cut up his deer. Yes, his wife said, but not when children are getting off a school bus.
As one man put it, “A new commandment I give unto you, to love one another as I love you.” A reality many don’t care to understand.
Good deeds, generosity and compassion are still the key.
