MORGANTOWN — WVU juniors Kyle Gray and Darius Hill were named to the East All-Region first team by the American Baseball Coaches Association on June 13.
This was the second time Hill collected the honor. He earned first-team accolades in 2016.
Gray was recognized for the first time. This marks the third consecutive season at least one Mountaineer was named to the first team.
The awards add to a long list of honors for the WVU duo, who both were named to the all-Big 12 team, Gray on the first team and Hill on the second team. They each earned Big 12 all-tournament team accolades, and Hill was named to the academic all-Big 12 first team.
Gray was selected by the New York Yankees in the 14th round of the MLB draft last week.
A second baseman from Blanco, Texas, Gray had a 23-game hit streak this season, the longest by a Mountaineer since 2009, and 14 home runs. He led the team in nearly every offensive category and was second in the Big 12 with a .677 slugging percentage; third with a .374 batting average, a .462 on-base percentage and 14 home runs; fourth with 134 total bases, and seventh with 74 hits.
In Big 12 play, Gray led the league with a .391 batting average; was second with a .759 slugging percentage and 66 total bases; third with eight home runs; fourth with a .460 on-base percentage and 34 hits; and seventh with 24 runs scored.
Hill, a right fielder from Dallas, led the team and finished second in the Big 12 with 79 hits; was third in the conference with 20 doubles, and was ninth in the league with 115 total bases.
He was second on the team with a .329 batting average and 41 runs scored and added four home runs, 36 RBIs, a .479 slugging percentage and a .362 on-base percentage. Hill’s 240 at-bats led the team and rank No. 7 in a season in team history.
In conference action, Hill was sixth in the Big 12 with a .364 batting average and finished second with 36 hits and sixth with nine doubles.
