After School Explorers offers free summer programs at Preston schools

KINGWOOD — After School Explorers is teaming with West Preston and Terra Alta East Preston to offer free summer programs.

 West Preston

  •  Summer Selfie Art Camp will be 9 a.m.-noon  Monday through Friday at the school, with instructor Mallory Young. On Monday students will be inspired by Paul Klee and tissue paper.  On Tuesday campers will learn about Andy Warhol’s linoleum pop art prints.  Wednesday will feature acrylic snap chat selfies.  Thursday will be self portraits inspired by Pablo Picasso.  Friday finishes with Roy Lichtenstein pop art self portraits.
  •  Learning in Motion will stop at the Masontown Park 9-11:30 a.m. Wednesday, and on July 11 and Aug. 1.  Learning in Motion is a retro-fitted school bus that is a mobile learning center.  It will be offering STEM activities on the bus, bringing families lunch and giving books out to the community.  Wendy Dillon and Elizabeth Doerr will be on hand to help with learning activities.
  •   Summer Library will be at West Preston  from 10 a.m.-noon    June 19 and 26, and July 10, 17, 24 and 31.    Vicki Portzer and Sabrina Spahr are planning summer library activities.  Little Learner families are also welcome to  check out books and resources.
  •   Summer Gardening Program will teach the Junior Master Gardeners Curriculum from Texas A&M University  from 9 a.m.-noon    June 20 and 27;   July 11, 18 and 25; and Aug. 1.   Students will be learning while digging in the dirt.  Cindy Strahin and Vicki Portzer will be leading the gardening program at West.

Terra Alta East Preston

  •  TAEP Summer Camp begins Monday   and runs to Friday,  with instructors Mikaila Strawser and Andrea Loughry.  The free camp will be noon-2 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at the school. For the field trip on Wednesday the program will begin at 11:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Friday.  The field trips will include Cathedral State Park and Blackwater Falls.  Bring a bag lunch all five days.  Snacks will be provided.
  •  Learning in Motion will stop at the Terra Alta Park 12:30-3 p.m. Monday and  July 9 and 30.   Dillon and  Doerr will be on hand to help with learning activities.
  •   Summer Library will be  10 a.m.-noon on  June 19 and 26, and July 10, 17, 24 and 31.   Mikaila Strawser and Lori Rodeheaver are planning  summer library activities.  Little Learner families are  also welcome to  check out books and resources.
  •   Summer Gardening Program will teach the Junior Master Gardeners Curriculum 9 a.m.-noon on Wednesdays,  June 20 and 27, and July 11, 18 and 25, and Aug. 1.
