Competition could help better garbage service

Pauline Shahan, Morgantown
I disapprove of the services I am receiving from Republic Services garbage collection. Last week, due to a holiday, all pickups were running a day late. I understand. Tuesday is the normal day for my pickup. I understood it would be Wednesday.
On May 30, I called the number listed for Republic and explained that I had my freezer cleaned out May 28. I explained to the Republic representative that due to cleaning my freezer out, I had a large amount of garbage and to make sure it was picked up May 30. I was told that was the plan. My neighbors’ trash on both sides of my street were picked up but mine wasn’t. My bill has always been paid on time, too.

On Thursday, I was getting desperate. The frozen garbage was thawed and my garbage cans were full and I had no place to put any more garbage.
A Republic representative assured me that they would pick it up Thursday. Guess what? No Thursday pickup.
I called again Friday and explained to a Republic representative this terrible situation. He assured me I was on the list for a Friday pickup. At 3:30 p.m. on Friday, I again called and talked with still another Republic representative, who again assured me I would have my garbage picked up by 5 p.m. It didn’t happen, so my garbage remained here rotting until my normal pickup day Tuesday.

I am so upset at having to pay for a service and then almost beg the service provider to render the service. It is so discouraging and we have no recourse. If there were only some competition, I think things would be better.
Also, I understand there are only three Republic Service centers in the U.S. The closest one I talked with was in North Carolina. I waited up to a half hour on hold in order to even reach that service center.

I hope no one else has had as bad of an experience as I have with garbage service.
