Don’t make it harder for state workers to do job

Steven Knudsen, Morgantown
Most people are familiar with the phrase First do no harm.”
Applicable to doctors, it’s time to apply it to state workers who use their work vehicles for commuting.
I am all for proper calculations of fringe benefits and curtailing the use of work vehicles for personal use, but some use of state vehicles for commuting is justified.
State inspectors, for instance, may need to drive a state vehicle in a direction opposite the direction from their home to the state office. In this case, it’s a win-win for the inspector to park their vehicle at their property overnight.
A similar argument can be made for bus drivers as well. The state should clean up its record keeping and audit how these policies are working, but let’s not “throw the baby out with the bath water” and make it harder for honest state workers to do their jobs.
