Local military sign vandalized over weekend

W. Va. — The sign which identifies the military units, past and present, who call the U.S. Army Reserve Center off of Comfort Inn Drive home was vandalized over the weekend.

The graffiti was discovered by George “Scooter” Goldman, the father of Marine Lance Corporal Shane Goldman, who received the Medal of Honor six years after his death in Iraq.

Scooter said he was working on the Boston Beanery’s deck Sunday morning, when he noticed the graffiti which has stylized lettering that appear to spell “herb.” There was identical graffiti next to the urinal in the Beanery’s men’s bathroom, Scooter said.

He believes the vandalized happened Saturday night and contacted The Dominion Post in hopes that someone would recognize what he thought was a gang sign.

“I can’t stand doing nothing,” he said.

The U.S Army Reserve Center is home to the 300th Chemical Company, which is currently deployed in the Middle East leaving only a rear-guard detachment, Major Whinston Antion, U.S. Army, said.

Antion said the incident had been reported up the chain of command and they were taking it seriously. He said a work order to fix the damage has been submitted and he called the Monongalia County Sheriff’s office Monday morning to file a report.

Chief Deputy Al Kisner said the department is investigating.
