WHEELING — Morgantown High swept the doubles titles April 25 and holds a commanding lead after the first day of the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference girls’ tennis tournament, at the Wheeling Park Bubble.
Emme McKnight and Cat Wassick, at No. 1, Mackenzie Sorton and Bella Mascari, at No. 2, and Vinitha Joseph and Ashalia Aggarwal, at No. 3, all won championships.
McKnight and Wassick won by scores of 8-0, 8-1, 8-2 and 8-0, taking the title against a team from Parkersburg South.
Sorton and Mascari were 8-0, 8-1, 8-2 and 8-4 winners, beating Parkersburg South in the final.
Joseph and Aggarwal had a first-round bye, then earned 8-0, 8-0 and 8-0 wins, beating a Linsly team in the final.
MHS has 12 points, with Parkersburg South and Linsly tied for second, at seven, and Wheeling Park at six.
University and Trinity each earned one point,
The Hawks’ Maya Gharib and Grace Valenzuela lost in the first round at No. 1. Madison Johnston and Clara Lehki also lost in the first round, at No. 2. The No. 3 team of Emily Benson and Lucy Roh won the first-round match but bowed to Joseph and Aggarwal in the second round.
Trinity’s No. 1 team of Molly Rubenstein and Sara Seitz beat the UHS team in the first round and lost in the second. The Warriors’ No. 2 team of Regan Baker and Caitlyn Nine lost in the first round.
Girls’ singles play is scheduled to take place today, at West Liberty.
BOYS’ TENNIS
OVAC tourney: WHEELING — University High won the 5A team title late Tuesday, thanks to singles championships by Drew Hawthorne, Kyle Hawthorne and Andre Barcinas. It was the Hawks’ third straight OVAC boys’ title.
GIRLS’ LACROSSE
University 9, Fairmont 6: Mallory Napolillo tallied four goals and Sophie Armstrong three in the Hawks’ win. Jordyn Snider and Mackenzie Slavensky each scored once, with Snider adding an assist.
Goalie Riley Phares made eight saves for UHS, which plays at Morgantown on Friday.
Audrey Hannah and Rhyan Cochran netted two goals each to lead Fairmont.
GIRLS’ JV LACROSSE
University 8, Fairmont 4: Emily McCabe, Sela Chico and Olivia Quarrick each scored two goals to pace the Hawks, with Quarrick adding an assist. Chasity Louk and Sophie Valachovic tallied the other goals, and Morgan Wassick had an assist. UHS goalie Abigail Cottrell had three saves.
SOFTBALL
Brooke 13, Morgantown 5: WELLSBURG — Brooke Pyles drove in two of the Mohigans’ five runs in the lost to the Bruins.
