WVU roundup: Big 12 honors 4 tennis players for academics

MORGANTOWN — Four members of the WVU tennis team were named to the academic all-Big 12 team, as announced by the league April 24.
Senior Yvon Martinez (petroleum and natural gas engineering) and juniors Paula Goetz (industrial engineering) and Abigail Rosiello (immunology and medical microbiology) were named to the first team, while senior Lyn Yuen Choo (professional pharmacy) earned second-team honors.
Of the 30 women to make the first team, Goetz and Rosiello were two of eight to have a perfect grade-point average.
The award marks the second consecutive year Goetz was named to the first team. Choo earned her fourth recognition. Martinez was named to the second team in 2016.
AUTO RACING
TALLADEGA, Ala. — Travis Braden, a driver for RFMS Racing, is looking forward to the General Tire 200 at the Talladega Superspeedway on Friday.
Braden, a Wheeling, W.Va., native and graduate of WVU, has dual degrees in aerospace and mechanical engineering.
He has shown promise early on this season, but has had mixed results.
“Sunday at Salem was rough,” said Braden, who is competing in his first full-time ARCA season. “We had a pretty strong car, and I made one big mistake and got involved in a spin. It forced us to put on our last set of new tires early in the race, and then I just had to hang on and struggle to the finish.
“We struggled as a team in Nashville, but this one was more on me, so now I’m focused on putting together a full race for my team finally. I am looking forward to taking on Talladega Superspeedway, and RFMF Racing and I are working out strategies as we speak to hopefully put us in good position to avoid the wrecks and be there for a strong finish at the end.”
Braden is a two-time ARCA/CRA Super Series champion.
