Legislators have a lot of explaining to do

Dan Carnegie, Morgantown

Great job to all our teachers in doing an impossible job with our children. Keep up the great work. I support you getting a pay raise and all your picketing. You put West Virginia on the national map and started a movement.

The state Legislature never seem to have the money for teacher’s raises, but yet every year they run over their 60-day regular session.

Special sessions of the Legislature cost about $35,000 per day. Lawmakwers finished up on time this year. I guess miracles do happen. And they found the money to give teachers a 5 percent pay raise.

Let’s remember most West Virginians don’t come close to legislators’ income and benefits. Most West Virginians struggle to put food on the table for their children. These folks have to work weekends and holidays and work 12 months a year.

So everyone is encouraged to make sure they reward the legislators at the ballot box on May 8 and Nov. 6.

These lawmakers also need to explain why they are not taking the students’ march on March 24 on gun control seriously and what they are doing in response to a mass shooting. (Many of these students can’t vote yet or write a check.)

These West Virginia politicians seem to be more concerned about lack of coal severance revenues. They should also explain the coal industry and black lung to students.

Many of our military suffer with PTSD. Explain to the students why many involved in these shootings do, too.

Thanks again, teachers, for all you do. I am not for arming you in the classroom. Instead, aim to spend any extra money on a living wage for all of you.
