MORGANTOWN – WVU redshirt-sophomore linebacker Brendan Ferns tore the same ACL that kept him out as a true freshman in 2016, a source told The Dominion Post.
The injury happened in practice last week and is a major blow to a position already lacking in depth and experience.
This is the third major injury Ferns has suffered in this three-year career with the Mountaineers. Last season, he separated his shoulder in late September and missed the remainder of the year.
Ferns was battling for the starting “Sam” linebacker position, after teammate Quondarius Qualls also injured his ACL last month. Ferns was also supposed to be an important depth piece to a linebacker corps with little to no experience. Expected to take his reps are Zach Sandwisch and Adam Hensley.
Ferns was a highly rated recruit from St. Clairsville, Ohio.
