Kingwood man pleads guilty to possession of a controlled substance while in custody

KINGWOOD — A Kingwood man was sentenced to one to five years in prison on charges of possession of a controlled substance while in custody.
Under a plea agreement, Joshua Haskiell pleaded guilty to one count of possession of a controlled substance while in custody. Charges of obtaining a controlled substance by subterfuge and conspiracy were dismissed.
Haskiell’s attorney, Justin Gregory, told the court his client has been in prison for 22 months.
“This stems back to a previous guilty plea,” he said. Gregory told the court Haskiell has a lengthy history of drug abuse that began when he was 14. He said Haskiell became addicted to heroin at age 22.

“He has family is willing to help him,” Gregory told the court. He said Haskiell has only had a 10-day treatment plan for drug abuse.

When asked by Judge Lawrance Miller Jr. if he had anything to say, Haskiell said he hoped to get out of prison and make a contribution to society.

“You’ve been here before,” Miller said. “You need close supervision and you need to take steps for treatment.” He told Haskiell he did not believe he was a good candidate for probation. “You’ve been on probation in two other cases and both times your probation was revoked,” he said.
“I have to consider your drug abuse and past history. You were trying to get a controlled substance in the hallway outside the court when you were coming to a court hearing,” the judge added.
