Morgantown bridge renamed MHS Veterans Bridge

CHARLESTON — The Legislature approved a resolution on Friday to rename the South High Street Bridge in Morgantown as the Morgantown High School Veterans Bridge.

This was done through HCR 100, lead sponsored by Delegate Joe Statler, R-Monongalia, and co-sponsored by Delegate Cindy Frich, R-Monongalia. The House adopted it on Thursday followed by the Senate on Friday.

The resolution notes that many MHS students have served in the military and several were killed, including 18 MHS alumni who died in Vietnam.

Among them was U.S. Army Cpl. Thomas W. Bennett, posthumous recipient of the Medal of Honor and the only conscientious objector to be listed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. It also names Air Force Lt. Col. Carroll B. Lilly, whose plane went down while providing close air support on a search and rescue mission in bad weather conditions and whose body was never recovered.

Even today, the resolution says, MHS alumni continue to serve.

The resolution request the Division of Highways to make and place signs at each end of the bridge.
