Teacher recognized by WVDAR

MORGANTOWN — “The closer you are, the deadlier it gets,” Phil Caskey, University High School social studies teacher, explained to his students, “just like in the Civil War.”

Caskey, the West Virginia Daughters of the American Revolution’s (WVDAR) Outstanding Teacher of American History 2017, was teaching the rules of “Battlecry,” a tabletop battle game he uses to help get students engaged in their education.

“If you involve people, you’re going to get them to learn,” Caskey said.

He said he strives to make learning as involved and fun as possible. His teaching philosophy is guided by a quote from Benjamin Franklin — “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.”
