Hawks let a late lead slip away in first loss of season

PARKERSBURG — The University High boys’ basketball team suffered its first loss of the season in a top five showdown, at Parkersburg South, 67-63, on Jan. 24.

After commanding most of the game, the Hawks (10-1) had their lead slip away in the fourth quarter.

“We weren’t patient late and I called a couple timeouts to tell them to make [PSHS] play defense,” head coach Joe Schmidle said. “We just weren’t very disciplined. We didn’t make shots and scored eight points in the fourth quarter while they scored 20. They made five 3-pointers and we didn’t made any. That was the difference in the game. We were up 13 points at one point in the third quarter.

“We quit doing what got us there.”

Ethan Ridgeway was the leading scorer, with 23 points, while Kaden Metheny added 14 to his team’s total.

The Hawks will travel across town to face Morgantown at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 26, at the Rowdy Center.
