Prep roundup: Woods nets 30 points in Trinity win

WEIRTON — Daniel Woods scored a career-high 30 points and grabbed 11 rebounds Jan. 18 to lead Trinity Christian to an 80-68 boys’ basketball win over Madonna.

The 6-foot-5 center netted a dozen baskets for the Warriors (8-2). Briston Bennett added 15 points, Caleb Jenkins 13 and Joel Robertson 10, and Jenkins dished 13 assists.

Tony Sellitti and Lucky Pulice had 16 points each for the Blue Dons.

Clay-Battelle 80, Valley Wetzel 77: BLACKSVILLE — The Cee-Bees went without a basket in the third quarter to fall nine points behind, then roared back to tie the game in regulation and go on to win in double overtime. Seth Casino had 16 of his team-high 24 points in the OT periods to power C-B (3-5).

Gage Statler tossed in 18 points and had three key 3-pointers late in the game for C-B. Levi Carrico had 17 points, and Gunner Brummage tallied nine points to go with 19 rebounds.

Chase Ammons added seven assists for the Cee-Bees, who play at Meadow Bridge today, in the WVHIT tournament.

Levi Streets led the Lumberjacks with 26 points and Tyler Kocher added 23.

GIRLS

Preston 52, Grafton 49: GRAFTON — Taylor Mayne tallied 16 points and Kirsten Brown 13 to pick up for injured Makenzie Friend and the Knights (7-4) held on to edge the Bearcats.

Preston had a 17-point lead in the third quarter. Grafton used a 16-1 run to cut the margin to two but could not get any closer.

The Knights play host to Bridgeport on Saturday.

The Bearcats’ Ally Peters had a game-high 20 points.

Clay-Battelle 52, Paden City 25: PADEN CITY — Joleigh Sollars tallied a team-high 12 points, Abbey Ammons added 11, and the Cee-Bees (5-5) pulled away in every quarter for the easy win.

Clay-Battelle next plays Saturday, hosting Union in the WVHIT tournament.

Hannah Loy led Paden City with 10 points.

JV BOYS

Trinity 51, Madonna 30: Mark Spruill netted 11 points and Caleb Rice 10 for the Warriors (8-0).

JV GIRLS

Preston 44, Grafton 37: Macie Roy netted 16 points, Reagan Knotts 13 and Kylie Felton 10 to lead the Knights (8-2).

FRESHMAN BOYS

Morgantown 53, Wheeling Park 50: Ben Long had 18 points to lead the Mohigans (4-0) to victory in their first game in 34 days. Kyle Hawkins added 14 points for MHS.

MIDDLE SCHOOL GIRLS

South 8s 54, Westwood 34: Olivia Austin led the Stallions (7-3) with 16 points.Kam Giesel added 14 for South. Maddie McClurg and Anna Miller topped the Warriors with nine points each.

St. Francis 8s 49, Monongah 6: Marisa Fijewski netted 10 points to pace the Trojans (8-1). Kerrington Peasak collected seven rebounds, Sofia Wassick four assists and Lea Hatcher four steals.

MIDDLE SCHOOL BOYS

Central Preston 46, Bruceton 15: Tanner Haskiell led the Wildcats (9-3) with 12 points. Kevin Wilson topped Bruceton, with five.

HOCKEY

MoHawks 6, Central Valley 5: BEAVER FALLS, Pa. — Quintin Smith netted four goals and assisted on a fifth to pace Morgantown’s win.

Daniel Arthurs and Carter Kline each contributed a goal and three assists, and Daniel Kourtsis added two assists.

Syd Smith made 25 saves for the MoHawks (3-7-3), whose next game is Tuesday, at Connellsville, Pa.
