MORGANTOWN — West Virginia has added another critical piece to the basketball roster build with a commitment from St. John’s transfer guard Joson Sanon.
Sanon, 6-foot-5, 200-pounds, only spent one season with the Red Storm where he averaged 7.9 points and 2.4 rebounds per game while shooting 33.8-percent from the floor and 33.6-percent from three after being a highly ranked transfer addition last off-season.
Prior to his time at St. John’s, Sanon was at Arizona State for a year, where he averaged 11.9 points and 3.4 rebounds per game while shooting 42.2-percent overall and 36.9-percent from three.
The Massachusetts native was the No. 29 rated prospect in the 2024 recruiting class and fielded offers from Arizona, Kansas, Connecticut, Kentucky and a number of others.
During that time, current West Virginia assistant Yusuf Ali was on staff with the Sun Devils giving a connection to the Mountaineers.
Sanon committed to the program after an official visit to Morgantown and gives the Mountaineers an athletic wing and big guard that brings plus athleticism and shot-making ability. He excels at creating his own shot and has the ability to get to the rim, while also being an asset shooting the ball.
Sanon has the size to defend multiple positions and will immediately slot into challenging for a role as a starting wing for Ross Hodge’s basketball team.
There is a lot of upside here, even with concerns over his efficiency last season, but with Big 12 experience where Sanon played well he’s a piece that could tie the roster together.
Adding to the equation is the fact that Sanon has two years of eligibility remaining.
West Virginia is now up to 14 total roster slots this off-season giving the program potentially room for one more if the coaching staff elects to take that route.
