FAIRMONT – Fairmont police have arrested a Detroit man in the murder of Fairmont resident Billy Wooten III, who was shot Sunday on McKinney Street in Fairmont, according to City of Fairmont Police Chief Steve Shine.

Reports of the incident came in around 8 a.m. Sunday. Officers responded to the scene and began interviewing witnesses, learning that a man had been spotted running from the scene of the shooting and a silver car had sped away from the area.

During the investigation in Fairmont, a report came in from Harrison County that a silver vehicle was involved in a crash on I-79. The crash resulted in the 23-year-old female driver and a 34-year-old male passenger being taken into custody. Both were later charged with drug offenses.

Fairmont Police responded to Harrison County to continue the shooting investigation, believing the occupants of the crashed car to be involved. After analyzing evidence and interviews with the suspects, police charged Brandon Vaughn, 34, of Detroit, with Wooten’s murder.

Shine commended officers for quick work gathering information and putting details together. Shine also noted his appreciation for the inter-agency cooperation and assistance of WV State Police in this investigation for providing critical operational support.

At this time, this is an ongoing investigation. If anyone has additional information regarding the shooting, they are asked to contact lead investigator Lt. Martin at 304-366-2217.
