MORGANTOWN – There are plenty of places in Morgantown to grab breakfast.
But there aren't quite as many where breakfast feels like it came from somebody's kitchen rather than a restaurant.
That's part of the charm of Grandma's Country Kitchen.
The locally owned restaurant has built a following around the kind of food that doesn't need much explanation -- biscuits and gravy, omelets, pancakes, country-fried steak, home fries and other comfort-food staples.
It's straightforward food, served in generous portions, and that is precisely the point.
Grandma's has been part of the greater Morgantown dining scene for more than a decade, beginning with a roadside stand near Granville before growing into a full restaurant. Owners Bobby Mayle and Crystal Frum have continued expanding the business, most recently opening a much larger location at Morgantown Mall.
The new location gives Grandma's more room, but it doesn't change what made the restaurant popular in the first place.
Walk in and you'll find the sort of crowd that tells you plenty about a restaurant. Families, regulars, workers and people simply looking for a good meal fill the tables.
That's usually a better endorsement than any sign outside the door.
Grandma's has the feel of an old-fashioned country diner -- casual, comfortable and unconcerned with being trendy. The menu is built around familiar food, including all-day breakfast and rotating specials, along with homemade desserts.
And maybe that's why the name fits so well.
Everybody has an idea of what "Grandma's cooking" is supposed to taste like. It's filling. It's familiar. It's meant to make you slow down for a few minutes and enjoy the meal in front of you.
Morgantown has plenty of restaurants trying to give diners something new.
There's still something to be said for a place that understands the value of giving them something they already know they like.
Grandma's Country Kitchen seems to understand that pretty well.
