MORGANTOWN – Morgantown High School basketball senior Max Frey announced his verbal commitment over the weekend to join the program at West Liberty University next fall.

Frey, a first-team All-State selection for the Mohigans in 2025-2026 after helping lead them to another run to the Class AAAA state semifinals, averaged 16.5 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 2.4 assists while shooting 51% from the field.

The 6-foot-3 guard will be going from one winning program in MHS to another in West Liberty, as the Hilltoppers are one of the top programs in Division II.

In fact, since 2009-2010, West Liberty has the best winning percentage (.880) among all three NCAA basketball divisions, with a record of 490-67.

Since 2004-2005, WLU men's basketball has made 17 straight appearances in the NCAA D-II Tournament, including 11 Sweet Sixteen berths. It holds the longest active streak in NCAA Division II with 21 straight 20-win seasons and has produced 36 1st-team all-conference selections.

"First and foremost, I want to give all glory and praise to my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I wouldn't be the player I am today without Him," Frey said via his social media. " I'm beyond blessed and excited to announce that I'm committing to West Liberty University to continue my academic and athletic career. I want to thank my family and friends for always believing in me, supporting me, and making countless sacrifices throughout this journey. I wouldn't be here without you. To all of my coaches, trainers, teammates, and everyone who has invested in me along the way, thank you. Every lesson, every challenge, and every opportunity has helped shape me into the player and person I am today. Thank you to Coach Lamberti and the entire West Liberty coaching staff for believing in me. I'm so incredibly grateful for this opportunity!"

Frey emerged as a key piece to the MHS puzzle last season (his junior year) after earning a role on the varsity squad as a sophomore in 2024-2025. He will return for his senior season this year and is among the early candidates for player of the year.

"I'm really proud of Max," MHS head basketball coach Dave Tallman said. "He's earned this. West Liberty is one of the premier programs in college basketball. The new five-year rule for NCAA athletes has made it difficult for the class of 2027. This is a big-time offer from a big-time program, and Max fits the style of play perfectly. They love to play fast, and usually lead the country in scoring. Max is one of my all-time favorite players. I'm really excited for him and his family."

MHS finished 2025-26 with a 21-3 record and will once again be a frontrunner in Class AAAA when the season tips off in December.
