William Duane “Bill” Hines, Sr., 75, of Morgantown, known by many as “Wolfman”, passed away Wednesday, April 1, 2026 in WVU Medicine – JW Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, with his loving family by his side.
Bill was born July 19, 1950 in Morgantown, a son of the late William C. and Lora Merle Cork Hines.
Survivors include his wife of more than 55 years, Freda Mae Hertzog Hines; two children, Angela Hines and life companion Joy Carr (Bill’s “Bestie”), and William D. “Bill” Hines, Jr. and wife Andrea; two grandchildren, Caylie Hines-Hanlin and Malaki Hines; his bonus grandson, Dante Brown; as well as his extended family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Gerald Hines.
Bill was a proud Vietnam Veteran of the United States Army serving two tours of duty; and a member of the Vietnam Veterans Motorcycle Club for 35 years. He was a coal miner and truck driver. He loved to ride his Harley and swim in his pool.
Bill was one of the best friends you could ever have. He religiously checked in on his pals everyday by text or phone calls. Mind you, he wasn’t the most technologically advanced guy (often texting the wrong person or when taking pictures, covering the camera with his pinky finger), but it was always the thought that counted. He could spend hours watching cat videos on YouTube.
Beyond anything, with every single fiber of his being, Bill loved and adored his grandchildren. He would brag about them to anyone who would listen. He was a devoted husband and father, and will be incredibly missed by his family and everyone who knew him.
Friends may join the family to honor Bill’s life and legacy in Smith Funeral & Cremation Care, 108 Holland Avenue, Westover, Tuesday, April 7, from 5 to 8 p.m., and again Wednesday, April 8, from 11 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 12 noon, officiated by Pastor Stephen Lowe. Interment will follow at the West Virginia National Cemetery, where Full Military Honors will be accorded by WVANG Funeral Honors Detail, Marion County VFW Honor Guard, Westover VFW Post 9916, and Morgantown VFW Post 548. Bill will be escorted to the cemetery in procession by an honor mission from members of the West Virginia Patriot Guard Riders.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution, in Bill’s memory, to any VFW Group or to the Shack Neighborhood House, P.O. Box 600, Pursglove, WV 26546 (the-shack.org).
