MORGANTOWN – The University High girls’ soccer team fell to Washington 2-1 in a battle of early-season favorites in the North Region of Class AAAA. Washington scored the opener through freshman Gabby Reyes just before halftime and added a second five minutes into the second half. UHS freshman Brynn Ferry cut the lead in half with her fourth goal in two games, but the Hawks couldn't find an equalizer. UHS will take a 1-1-0 record into Tuesday's contest against Brooke at home at 5:45 p.m.
Morgantown High opened its 2026 campaign with first-year head coach Alyson Hill's first victory at the helm of the program. MHS downed Martinsburg 2-1 at home on Saturday and will visit North Marion on Tuesday for a 6:00 p.m. kickoff.
Preston drew 1-1 with Berkeley Springs to begin the 2026 season before falling 10-0 to a strong Parkersburg South side. The Knights will attempt to tally their first win of the year against Keyser on Thursday in Kingwood, with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m.
BOYS SOCCER
Morgantown High began the season 2-0 last week with victories over Buckhannon-Upshur and Martinsburg. First-year head coach Brian Shirak is off to a hot start after taking over the helm of the program. The Mohigans downed Buckhannon-Upshur 3-1 on Thursday before returning to Pony Lewis Field on Saturday and defeating the Bulldogs 2-1. MHS will host Grafton on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. before a trip to Hedgesville on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
After defeating Lewis County 4-2 in its season-opening contest, University High fell 7-3 to Washington on Friday. Sophomore striker Xander Burwell scored two goals for the Hawks, with junior Andrew Ballard adding the other, his fourth of the season in two games. Ballard also provided both assists to Burwell. UHS will travel to Wheeling Park on Tuesday for a match at Wheeling Island Stadium at 6:00 p.m.
Trinity Christian dropped its first two contests last week by slim margins, falling 4-3 to Parkersburg Catholic on Wednesday and 4-2 to Keyser on Friday. Senior Evan Knight provided two goals on Wednesday, with sophomore Logan Adams adding the third goal and an assist. The Warriors will have another shot for their first notch in the win column on Friday at home against Berkeley Springs at 6:00 p.m.
VOLLEYBALL
Morgantown High School began its state title defense with six straight victories before falling to Sacred Heart (KY) over the weekend. The Mohigans have only dropped three sets through their opening seven matches, which were all best-of-three sets. MHS will host a quad-match on Saturday inside the Rowdie Center at Morgantown High, welcoming North Allegheny (Pa.), North Catholic (Pa.), and Cabell Midland to Wilson Avenue for a jam-packed day of action beginning at 9:00 a.m.
University High began its 2026 season 1-3 last week with a victory over Spring Valley and losses to Wheeling Central, Philip Barbour, and Martinsburg. The Hawks will travel to Parkersburg South on Tuesday for a tri-match with the Patriots and Huntington before returning home for a quad-match on Wednesday with East Fairmont, Linsly, and Buckhannon-Upshur visiting Baker's Ridge. Martinsburg and Preston will travel to UHS on Thursday.
Clay-Battelle began the 2026 season with a pair of defeats on Thursday to Madonna and Fairmont Senior. The Cee-Bees will travel across Mon County on Tuesday for their next contest with Trinity Christian, who will be playing its season opener. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
