James “Jim” “Jimmy” Leslie Howard, 80, of Franklin Township, Ohio, passed away peacefully Sunday, March 15, 2026, in his home surrounded by his loving family. Jim was born January 26, 1946, in Charleston, to the late Harold “Ike” Howard and Mabel M. Dunfee Howard. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Julia.
He was a proud graduate of Morgantown High School and went on to earn both his Bachelor of Science degree and a Master’s degree in Safety and Industrial Health from West Virginia University. During his time at WVU, Jim was a member of the ROTC program and played the tuba in the Mountaineer Marching Band, later known as the Pride of West Virginia.
Jim honorably served his country for 16 years in active and reserve service as a Captain in the United States Army. As an Infantry Officer, he was stationed in Korea at the Demilitarized Zone along the 38th parallel.
Following his military service, Jim built a long and respected career with Armco, where he worked for 27 years as a supervisor of safety and industrial health.
On February 15, 1975, Jim married the love of his life, Lynn Anne Schoemaker Howard in St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in West View, Pa. Together they built a life centered on family, faith, and community.
Jim was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He is survived by his beloved wife, Lynn; his three sons, John L. Howard (Meghan), Peter J. Howard (Rachel), and Patrick C.S. Howard (Ari); his grandchildren: Jackson and Claire; William and Charlotte; and Evelyn and Thomas; his sisters, Jane Kirk and Jo Ellen Rodeheaver; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Jim worshiped at multiple United Methodist churches throughout his life. He was actively involved in his community, serving as a youth sports coach and as an advisor for Junior Achievement.
He found his greatest joy in supporting his children and grandchildren in all of their activities. Whether on the sidelines or in the audience, Jim was always present and encouraging. He had a gift for conversation, able to connect with anyone, anywhere, and was known as a thoughtful listener who could discuss just about anything.
Jim will be remembered for his steady presence, his dedication to family, and his genuine interest in others. He leaves behind a legacy of service, kindness, and quiet strength that will live on through all who knew and loved him.
A private service will be held in Morgantown. He will be laid to rest in Morgantown, with his parents and sister.
