At about 1 p.m. Sunday, deputies from the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence on Aaron Creek Road to conduct a welfare check on a male individual.
Upon arrival, deputies encountered a man experiencing a mental health crisis. The individual refused to exit the residence. A crisis negotiator with the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Office maintained consistent communication with the individual for several hours in an effort to resolve the situation peacefully.
Later in the afternoon, deputies said the individual ignited a fire within the garage of the residence. The fire spread rapidly to the main structure of the home. The individual surrendered to deputies on the scene without further incident.
The individual will be evaluated at a local hospital.
The Monongalia County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on the scene by Brookhaven and Clinton District volunteer fire departments.
