FAIRMONT - A reported incident “involving a teacher" sent West Virginia State Police to East Fairmont High School on Tuesday morning, the district said.
"This morning at approximately 10:20 a.m., Marion County Schools was informed by law enforcement agencies that West Virginia State Police and assisting agencies were on-site at East Fairmont High School, investigating a matter involving a teacher," Superintendent Donna Heston said in a statement.
"Marion County Schools is fully cooperating with law enforcement," Heston said.
"The safety and well-being of our students remain a priority," the superintendent continued. "To protect the integrity of the investigation, Marion County Schools cannot provide additional details at this time."
State Police has turned the investigation over to its Crimes Against Children Unit, which is based in Morgantown.
Inquiries to the unit were referred to state police headquarters in Charleston, which did not return calls Tuesday in time for this report.
East Fairmont High School, which is visible from Interstate 79 at its Airport Road address, was built in 1993 to replace the original East High building on Alta Vista Avenue.
The school is charted as the 17th-ranked high school in West Virginia by U.S. News and World Report, which regularly tracks the academic fortunes of high schools across the state and nation in its annual chronicling.
East High boasts an enrollment of 686 students in grades 9-12, with 27% of those students enrolled in Advanced Placement classes, according to most recent reporting by the publication.
