Wisman, Morgantown bear down defensively to earn season split with University High, 3-1

MORGANTOWN – As Maddie Wisman goes, so does Morgantown High softball.

The senior Robert Morris signee continued her strong season in the circle for the Mohigans (15-4) on Wednesday night against crosstown rival University, earning her 10th win of 2026 and leading her team to their seventh victory in a row.

“I really tried to embody the mindset I had last weekend in the Mon County Classic of refusing to lose,” Wisman said. “I know that even if I don’t have my best day, I have a defense behind me to keep me safe. These are some of my best friends and girls I’ve been playing with my entire life, and they make me feel so confident and supported out there.”

Wisman is now 10-2 this season with a 1.61 ERA in 82.2 innings pitched. She’s tallied 130 strikeouts and only 27 walks during her senior campaign so far.

On Wednesday, she threw a complete game against UHS (12-4) with four hits and only one unearned run allowed with seven strikeouts.

MHS tallied seven hits as a unit, with sophomore Kayleigh White earning the only multihit game for either side.

The Hawks totaled four hits in the game but failed to string together an impactful inning to keep themselves in the game after giving up all three runs to MHS in the second inning.

Senior Beth Robinson broke the ice in the contest with a single to right field that scored freshman Caroline Mallow.

That made way for White to poke a ball to center field that plated two more runs to extend the lead to 3-0 early on.

Wisman and the MHS defense kept the Hawks in check for the next couple of innings until an error and a sacrifice bunt put junior Kylin Oliveto on third.

She scored on a passed ball to give UHS its first run on the board, but Wisman slammed the door on the comeback bid in the sixth and seventh as the third-ranked Mohigans earned a massive victory over their second-ranked rivals.

“We need to keep building on the momentum from this win,” Wisman said. “This is our seventh win in a row, and we’ve beaten some great teams in that span. Being able to continue to capitalize is huge for us down the stretch.”

University will look to get back in the win column with matchups against Parkersburg South on the road Wednesday and Washington at home on Thursday.

MHS will have the rest of the week off until a pair of games against John Marshall on Monday at home and Tuesday on the road.
