13 dictates the PopCon fright theme

MORGANTOWN – For the 13th year, WV PopCon has returned to the Hazel and J.W. Ruby Community Center at Mylan Park.
This year’s rendition of the event was full of frights for congoers due to it being the 13th year for the event.
"We got a lot more interest from vendors by focusing on the horror theme," Said Jon Hayes, organizer of WV PopCon. "There are a lot of different aspects when it comes to Pop Culture and horror is one of them. We were able to get Rich's Farm down here and we hope to continue that relationship."
Hayes noted he had played around with the idea of theming one year off the horror aspect of pop culture.
"Next year may not fully be horror themed but, there will still be those aspects in next year’s con," Hayes added.
Having WV PopCon happen for 13 years feels unreal, Hayes said.
"It's happened 13 times now and it still feels unreal," he said. "It's like the growth of a child. It's a night and day difference from the first year to now. It's still a lot of work, but it definitely runs a lot smoother."
Hayes added he would like to hopefully focus on more areas of pop culture in the future, such as anime and other media.
For Erin Osborne, owner of Eco Prints, attending PopCon is always fun.
"The vibe is perfect. Everyone is so friendly and everyone wants to come and hang out," she said. "This is our third year attending and it's always so much fun."
Osborne noted her favorite part about attending PopCon is getting to see all of the different aspects of pop culture come together into one place.
"I hope to continue to see PopCon grow and get even more people attending and having fun celebrating all things pop culture," she said.
