Top-ranked Morgantown suffers first defeat of 2026 season to No. 3 George Washington, 4-3

MORGANTOWN – The 2026 Mon County Mohigan Baseball Classic produced some instant classics on Friday, with the nightcap between two of the top teams in Class AAAA ending the day with a one-run thriller.

Morgantown High saw its unscathed record take its first tally in the loss column on Friday night as George Washington downed the Mohigans 4-3 at Kendrick Family Ballpark.

The Patriots (11-2) earned the winning run on a two-out double to center field by Joel Nelson in the top of the seventh inning.

He was one of two batters for GW to earn multiple hits, as senior Eli Smith was also 2 for 4 at the plate with a pair of RBI in the third inning of a scoreless contest.

Trailing 3-0, junior Kane Williams sent a pitch over the right field fence to break the ice for the Mohigans (10-1), and the game was eventually drawn even in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of two-out runs.

MHS starter Maddox Boggs earned the first two outs of the seventh inning in five pitches, but sent the next two GW batters to base for free after two hit-by-pitches.

That brought Nelson (the leadoff hitter for the Patriots) to bat with a runner on first and second.

Boggs earned two strikes via foul balls, but Nelson won the at-bat (and the game), with a solid hit back up the middle that allowed junior Conor Tiano to score the go-ahead run, giving GW a massive victory.

Both teams will return to action on Saturday, on the final day of the 2026 Mon County Mohigan Baseball Classic.

The Mohigans will return to Kendrick Family Ballpark to battle Urbana (Md.), while the Patriots will head to Dale Miller Field at Mylan Park to battle University High. Both games are scheduled for 12:30 p.m.

MHS will then conclude its weekend with a contest against Ripley at The Dale at 5:30 p.m.
