Prep roundup: Spring Break brings busy times for local teams

MORGANTOWN – Spring Break might feel like anything except a break for teams competing during the season.

Whether traveling south or staying home for the week, multiple teams across various sports are working hard to round themselves into shape as we enter April.

Both the Morgantown and University High softball teams traveled to Kissimmee, FL, for the week to play multiple games at the Disney ESPN Wide World of Sports complex.

The Hawks started the week strong with an 8-2 victory over Manalapan (NJ) on Monday. UHS earned 13 hits in the contest, led by senior Sophia Lehosit, who went 4 for 4 with four RBI. Fellow seniors Maddie Campbell and Olivia Masoner each added an extra-base hit. Campbell earned the win in the circle, throwing a complete game with four hits allowed and a dozen strikeouts.

MHS improved to 7-1 this season with a pair of victories over Cicero-North Syracuse (NY) and Rowan County (NC). Senior Maddie Wisman fanned 14 batters in the game as the Mohigans earned 10 hits as a unit on Monday. Junior Carper Messerly went 3 for 3 at the plate while senior Beth Robinson scored two runs and hit a triple, the only XBH for MHS.

Preston earned its first win of the season on Monday with a 7-2 victory over Bridgeport. Rhylinn Sanders was 3 for 4 at the plate on offense, while throwing a complete game one-hitter against the Indians. Rachel Hamrick was 3 for 3 with a double and a home run for the Knights.

Defending WVSLA boys state champion Morgantown High improved to 4-0 with a one-goal win over Pickerington Central (Oh.), 13-12, on Saturday.

Junior Anthony Vessecchia tallied three goals and three assists in the game. Seniors Luke Quigley and Zion Joseph also scored a hat trick for MHS. Freshman Joey Perella saved 13 shots in the victory.

UHS split its pair of contests last week with an 8-7 win over Spring Mills on Friday, followed by a 16-10 defeat to Martinsburg on Saturday.

Maxwell Walker scored three goals and provided two assists against the Cardinals on Friday, before scoring six goals on Saturday (including his 100th career point).

The Hawks won the game against Spring Mills on a pass from goalkeeper James Robbins to Will Harper, who went on to score the game-winner with two seconds remaining.
