Friends of the Cheat set to construct three miles of Cheat River rail-trail

MORGANTOWN — Friends of the Cheat aims to have three miles of the Cheat River Rail-Trail open in 2024.

FOC has grant funding to do construction of this three-mile first phase of trail expansion, from the trailhead north toward Kingwood, said Associate Director Owen Mulkeen.

FOC has a partnership with the state Department of Transportation’s Division of Multimodal Transportation Facilities, which is fixing the first three bridges on that section of the trail — across Big Heather Run, Little Heather Run and Morgan Run, he said.

“We are hopefully going to putting out for bid that section of trail this fall-winter,” he said. They hope construction will start and be completed in 2024. They don’t have a cost estimate yet; that will be based on the bids that come in.

FOC also has a partnership with the West Virginia Army National Guard at Camp Dawson, Mulkeen said. The Guard is wrapping up its section: 4,000 feet of paved trail.
