Westover approves paving list, extension of Georgia Avenue

WESTOVER — Westover’s street paving project for the upcoming fiscal year was approved along with the extension of Georgia Avenue beyond Price Street during Monday night’s city council meeting.

The extension of Georgia Avenue, which will cover about a 20-by-150-foot space, is intended to create access to future development of about 15 homes on large lots.

Several streets were included in the proposed street paving project for the 2021-2022 fiscal year, totaling an estimated cost of about $185,000.

Streets listed include sections of Langford Avenue, Poling Avenue, Pierce Street, Lexington Avenue and Alley, as well as Baltimore Street, Wilson Boulevard, upper Second Street and Washington Avenue. Two streets were also listed as contingency on the project plan.

Bringing the Urban Archery Hunt to Westover was also reintroduced during the council meeting. The Urban Archery Hunt, which operates in several locations throughout Morgantown, is a group of about 60 volunteers working together to reduce deer populations in urban areas.

Rick Bebout, original volunteer coordinator for the hunt, said along with making roadways safer and helping prevent deer from feeding on residents’ gardens and shrubs, the hunters collect the venison and donate it to local organizations to keep the area’s vulnerable residents fed.

During the last meeting, Mayor Dave Johnson said he felt wary to bring the hunt to Westover due to the amount of responsibility he believed would fall on the city to organize the hunt; however, after speaking further with another volunteer of the hunt, Johnson said this might not be the case.

“What I’d like to do is bring them back and talk,” Johnson said. “We can have some questions for them and discuss it with them and see what we want to do if we want to do it.”

Although Johnson said he is still unsure if the city will introduce the hunt, council plans to speak further with the organization at the next meeting.

The next Westover City Council meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. July 19.
