Literacy skills focus of Write Brain program

KINGWOOD — Are you ready to become a published author with After School Explorers?

ASE will  offer Write Brain starting  Tuesday in the Virtual ASE HUB on Teams.

“Parents will see high enthusiasm from their kids for writing and reading, which means increased literacy skills,” ASE Program Director Susie Huggins said. “The After School Explorers is the only children’s virtual creative writing class in the area where you get to author an original children’s book for a young reader — and even receive a professionally printed hardcover copy of your book.”

Children participating will be given blank pages with pictures.  They will name the characters and write a  story about them, she said.

To participate,  parents can register in the ASE program at https://tinyurl.com/ASE-register.

Once registered, students will be able to participate in the Write Brain program.

“This program is ideal for students in grades 2-12,” Write Brain team leader Melva Roush, an ASE instructor at Aurora School, said.

Huggins agreed.

“This is great opportunity for home-school and virtual learning students,” she said.

Huggins said  students will learn about the writing process and can stop by for homework help.

“The Write Brain ASE program staff are educators, who will help students succeed every step of the way,” Vicki Portzer, ASE site coordinator at West Preston, said.

Write Brain will meet  at 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays.

In  February, Thursdays will be added so the group will meet twice weekly.

At the end of the project, in April, students will receive the book they wrote.  The book will include their photograph and biography.

“There will be a special event celebrating the book publishing,” Susan Daetwyler an ASE instructor at Aurora, said.

ASE receives funding for the 10 21st Century Community Learning centers across Preston County.

The grant is provided wholly or in part by a grant from the United States Department of Education under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, Title IV Part B, with grant administration carried out by the West Virginia Department of Education.

Cindy Strahin, an ASE instructor from West Preston, reminded those interested that  space is limited for the creative writing program.
