Junior Rangers program offered

After School Explorers virtually hosts event for K-12

KINGWOOD — After School Explorers will be offering a Junior Rangers enrichment program on Thursday nights online in the ASE Virtual Hub on the TEAMS app.

The program began Thursday and runs through Jan. 28. It is for students K-12.

“After School Explorer  is very excited to be working with Preston County Parks and Recreation to offer the Junior Rangers program to Preston students,” ASE Program Director Susie Huggins said.

PCPaRC Recreation Engagement Coordinator/Americorps VISTA Member Michael Bradley (Park Ranger Mike), who will be teaching the classes, said students will learn about recreation and moving to stay healthy, how to design your own park, how to create your own wild animal and how to deal with cabin fever.

Bradley will lead a discussion about recreation. The discussion will feature, “What is recreation and where can you find it?”

Students will talk about their favorite recreational places and tell why they are favorites. They also discuss who they enjoy recreational time with and why.

Students will also learn about the Junior Rangers motto and the Ranger Workout.

In week two of the program, students will be guided through designing their own parks with Park Ranger Mike.

Huggins said students will need a few supplies for this event — paper and crayons, colored pencils or markers.

She said the “build your own park” activity is a lively session with lots of creative design choices. This event combines art and life science.

In week three, students will go on a virtual Preston County Safari to learn about the names of animals and how they received those names.

Huggins said they will need paper and pencil for this event as students draw their own animal creations.

Finishing up, the Junior Ranger program will break the winter cabin fever blues, learning and participating in this interactive session that is great for the entire family.

After School Explorers receives funding for the 10 21st Century Community Learning Centers across Preston County. The grant is provided wholly or in part by a grant from the United States Department of Education under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, Title IV Part B, with grant administration carried out by the West Virginia Department of Education.

“The Preston County Parks and Recreation staff are fun and passionate recreational stewards who will help students succeed every step of the way,” Vicki Portzer, ASE site coordinator at West Preston, said.

“Space is limited for this program, so be sure to sign up early,” Bradley said.
