Green energy brings new opportunities

An article (DP-10-01-20) regarding the Shale Insight Conference paints such a one-sided view of the cost of green energy that it needs a response.

Mark Mills, of the Manhattan Institute, claims that the cost of making the transition to green energy would be equivalent to our mobilization for World War II.

Mills claims that going 100% carbon free with wind, solar and hydro would require 700% more construction. (Sounds like a lot of jobs there). Further, batteries, windmills and solar panels are physical systems that also require mining and processing of minerals. He fails to add that these minerals would not be burned, thus not adding more CO2 to the atmosphere.

More importantly, all his arguments ignore the fact that burning fossil fuels is costing us billions in relief for climate-related disasters like the West Coast fires and the Gulf Coast floods, among others, which can be directly linked to climate change. According to Navy Times, (July 29, 2016) rising oceans threaten to submerge 128 military bases. This past August, a derecho — a rare inland storm — destroyed 35% of Iowa’s corn crop. What will non-stop weather disasters cost U.S. taxpayers?

In fact, investment in renewables generates electricity cheaper than coal, and creates twice as many jobs as the same dollars invested in fossil fuels. We can actually have more jobs and cleaner air, while saving money on our electric bills!

Das column enjoyable and informative

Thank you, Vageesha Das, for your commentary “How Do Fire Extinguishers Work?” in The Dominion Post Sunday paper (DP-10-04-20).

As a former teacher, I enjoyed the science lesson about fire and its elements.

More importantly, I checked the fire extinguishers in our home, even weighing them.

There are some lucky teachers at Morgantown High School who have you as an 11th grade student.

Go, girl, go!

Taylor shooting about self-defense, not race

After reading the AP article (DP-10-04-20) titled “Recordings reveal confusion behind Breonna Taylor’s death,” maybe this will eliminate some of the confusion.

Anywhere on this earth if a police officer gets shot while serving a legal arrest warrant they will without hesitation, return fire. In Leonard Pitts’ column (DP-09-29-20), he made reference to the fact that only one shot was fired by Ms. Taylor’s boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, and now an AP article makes the same point. The shot in question hit one of the officers. My question is how many cops are you supposed to be allowed to shoot before they are permitted to return fire?

There is no scenario where police will trade one shot for one shot, especially if one of them is hit. This incident has nothing to do with race. The result would be the same no matter who fired the shot.

Biden’s economic plans would ruin America

I’m tired of watching Biden’s ridiculous campaign ads! His dream is to invest in Black Americans, revive the economy, get people back to work and raise taxes for big business and the rich, but at what cost?

The reality is he’ll force businesses to farm out more of our jobs to foreign countries because they won’t be able or they will choose not to continue to operate their companies in the U.S., which will drive our economy into a recession or depression. Then where will funding for health care, social security, and welfare come from?

Biden’s future looks bleak with bread lines. Trump wants to cut taxes for businesses and the rich to entice industry back into America and provide jobs for citizens. He been doing that for the past four years. America is on the brink of recovery. Don’t interrupt that by voting for Biden.

Let’s review his record. Why hasn’t he accomplished what he’s promising during the 45 years he has been in office? He was elected vice president, the second highest position in government, for eight years! Why should voters risk four more years on him?

Donald Trump has accomplished most of his 2016 campaign promises, except building the wall, which Democrats prevented. He’s accomplished more in four years (research the facts online) than Joe has during all his years in office. Trump knows how business works and has the advantage over Biden. He can realistically revive the economy and bring jobs back to American workers. That’s reality, if he’s re-elected. Biden only has an unrealistic dream.
