BRUCETON MILLS — Two inmates at federal facilities in Bruceton Mills have died this month.
At about 8:35 p.m. Tuesday, Jerome Jones was found unresponsive at the United States Penitentiary Hazelton, while at about 11:20 a.m. March 2, Isom Cooper was found unresponsive at the Federal Correctional Institution Hazelton.
In both cases, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, responding employees initiated life-saving measures. Emergency medical services were requested while life-saving efforts continued.
Jones was transported by EMS to a local hospital and subsequently pronounced dead on Wednesday by hospital personnel. Cooper was pronounced dead at the prison by EMS personnel.
Jones was a 35-year-old male who was sentenced in the Western District of Tennessee to an aggregate 330-month sentence for Carjacking and Carry and Use of a Firearm During and in Relation to a Crime of Violence, Specifically, Carjacking. He had been in custody at USP Hazelton, a high-security facility, since April 7, 2025.
Cooper was a 62-year-old male who was sentenced in the District of Columbia, Superior Court to a Life sentence for Armed Robbery of a Senior Citizen and Theft I. He had been in custody at FCI Hazelton, a medium-security facility, since April 22, 2024.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation was notified in both cases.
No employees or other inmates were injured in either case and at no time was the public in danger.
