Local girl scouts helping the community

Members of Girl Troop 51396 have been busy with community service projects over the past several days.

On Friday, they held their own Relay for Life event at the Cassville Fire Hall.

The troop’s community project this year was to help cancer patients and this event was planned to celebrate the hard work the girls put into that project.

The fire hall has an inside track and the Scouts made three teams, with a member of each team walking on the track at all times during the 2-hour event.

There were also carnival-type games set up and some fun food for participants as well.

The Scouts also spent the prior week doing challenges to earn pennies to bring to fill a jar as part of the fundraiser. Each Troop leader took extra money to give to them as they meet other challenges. That will also be added to the jar.

The service unit will match what the girls raised to donate as well.

At the end of the night, the Scouts went outside to walk with family members who are still fighting cancer or in remembrance of those who have died. Candles were lit in honor of them all — living or dead.

All money earned will go to Relay from Life.

This week, the Troop dropped off Care Bags to breast cancer patients at Mon Health Medical Center.

The girls decided this was what they wanted to do with the money they earned from their Fall Product sales profits. Each group made something special to go in the bags.

The Juniors made a blanket to keep patients warm during their treatments. The Brownies made inspirational bracelets for them to wear so they know they are loved. The Daisys made them gift boxes full of candy so they have sweets when there mouths dry out from the treatments.

A box of Girl Scout cookies, water, lotions, head scarves, chapstick and the candle carried in their honor Friday night were added.

Each girl made a personal card to go in each bag to encourage the ladies.

The Scouts made 30 bags and delivered them to the hospital to be passed out to the patients.
