Morgantown girls’ basketball team set to begin 2021-22 season

MORGANTOWN — Coming off of a 12-3 record and a semifinal run in the state tournament, Morgantown High girls’ basketball coach Jason White and his team are eager for their first game at Musselman on Friday.

The Mohigans will look for their leadership to start through lone senior Kerrington Peasak.

White sees her as his “coach on the court” and says he will need her help to lead off the court, as well.

“She really is a student of the game who has a high basketball IQ and I very much value her opinion on game decisions.” White said of his captain.

A good supporting cast of experienced juniors in Mia Henkins, Revaya Sweeney and Makayla Chipps all have minutes played in the state tournament and will help carry the load as well. Thrown in with all of the experience is a good mix of young, athletic players for MHS who will look to impact the game in different ways.

“We have multiple players that can shoot from outside … however, if you ask me the strength of this year’s team it would be athleticism. We have kids that can attack the rim and put pressure on the defense,” White said.

Aggressiveness will be a point of emphasis for Morgantown, and depth will serve them well for a deep run this season. Mixed within the nucleus of this roster are talented young players who will be looked upon to support their older teammates.

Sophomore point guard Sophia Wassick may be the fastest player on the team and can attack the rim. White even has a newcomer this year in freshman Sedaya Jones.

“She has a knack for getting to the foul line,” he said of his freshman.

Mentioning the ability of Chipps and Sweeney on the low block also proves how well-rounded the Mohigans roster is this year, which is something White values about his team.

“As you can see, we have great depth and it might be the best attribute of this team. They truly play for each other and they don’t care who gets the credit. They are fun to coach and have a great attitude and have the chance to be special if they refuse to let other’s work harder than them,” he said.

The Mohigans will tip-off their season on the road against Musselman at 6 p.m. Friday.
