Paws, Pictures, Pets, Oh My!

Animal lovers had the chance Tuesday to hang out or grab a snapshot with some fuzzy friends on WVU’s downtown campus.

Two Ladies Four Paws Rescue, based out of Dilliner, Pa., partnered with Sigma Kappa sorority and Delta Chi fraternity to host a fundraiser that benefited all three organizations. Volunteers gathered with several dogs on the Mountainlair green, allowing passersby to purchase photo sessions or playtime. It cost $5 to spend 15 minutes with the canines and $1 per photo.

Kate Sears, who is a member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority, volunteers with Two Ladies Four Paws and helped organize the fundraiser, said it proved a popular event. Anyone interested could schedule a time to visit online, which helped maintain COVID-19 guidelines, as well as just drop by  — as long as no more than 25 people were gathered at a given time.

Sears said more than $600 was raised, to be split between the rescue and philanthropic efforts of the sorority and fraternity.

“It was worth it,” she said. “That’s at least four bags of dog food.”

Two Ladies Four Paws Rescue takes in local dogs and cats, as well as rescues from across the nation and the world.

“The main hubs are Egypt, Kuwait, India and China,” Sears said. “We get street dogs, amputees — we received a dog, where someone broke her jaw and cut off her ears —  get them happy and healthy, and find them homes.”

She said a majority of the animals that come to the rescue have special needs, and staff spends time rehabilitating them as well as acclimating them to their new lives.

Since Tuesday’s benefit proved successful, Sears said she hopes to hold another soon on campus in partnership with her sorority.
