Laura Cunningham

Laura Drake Cunningham, 65, of Morgantown, died peacefully at home during the evening hours of Saturday, Jan. 9, 2021, surrounded by her loving family.

“Laurie” was a graduate of Morgantown High School and West Virginia University. She taught social studies at Suncrest Middle School for many years and loved her students dearly. She was a great cook, loved music of all genres, elephants, good books and her beloved dog, Annie.

Although Laurie’s heart failed at the end, her heart of hearts lives on in all whose lives she touched. She was committed to anyone struggling and she cared deeply for her family, friends, colleagues and students. She was an authentic, one-of-a-kind woman of substance and persistence who helped many overcome obstacles, always from a place of integrity. Her uniquely wonderful sense of humor remained fully intact and will forever be a part of us.

Laurie was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Anne Drake. She is survived by her two sons, Andrew Cunningham and his wife Carrie and Lucas Cunningham and his partner Trina Savage; Yia Yia to her grandchildren, Casper, Cole, Makayla and Levi; her siblings, Patty Drake, Tim Drake, and Maggie Clark; her nephew, Wilson Clark; nieces, Emily Clark and Olivia MacIsaac; her uncle, Charles Burnette, and his wife Margo; and several cousins.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. It was Laurie’s wish that such a service occur post-COVID.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Laura’s name to the Suncrest Middle School (note “Teacher Fund — Laura Cunningham” in memo). Teaching was her life’s passion and a donation will help her beloved colleagues buy teaching supplies. Checks can be mailed to: Suncrest Middle School, 360 Baldwin St., Morgantown, WV 26505.
